À l'origine du lien social, ce jour-là : les frères se coalisent pour mettre fin à la tyrannie du père de la horde primitive, un chef qui détient tous les pouvoirs et se réserve la jouissance des femelles ; ils le dévorent et chacun d'eux, par ce festin cannibalique, s'approprie une partie de sa puissance.
Une alliance entre semblables, un crime collectif, une grande fête, tel serait notre commencement, tel serait le fondement de la société humaine. «Au commencement était l'acte.» Et quel acte ! Après quoi s'instaure la culpabilité face au père mort, avec son corollaire : la vénération du totem ou du dieu. Après quoi prédomine l'horreur, le tabou, de l'inceste - l'horreur, par seulement l'interdit -, avec sa conséquence : l'exogamie.
Un mythe, cette thèse scandaleuse que Freud, après une longue enquête menée avec passion à travers la littérature ethnologique de l'époque (Frazer entre beaucoup d'autres), énonce dans le dernier des quatre essais de Totem et tabou ? Un mythe, un roman des origines ou bien la révélation, difficile à admettre au point d'être refoulée, que toute société repose sur un crime commis en commun et ne se maintient dans sa cohésion que par lui ?
